POMONA, Calif. – On Tuesday, the nationally-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team secured a 72-58 victory over the Mustangs of The Master's College. The win means the Broncos remain undefeated in their non-conference play.
Walking away with the win improves the CPP squad to 3-1 on the season, while the Mustangs now carry an even 2-2 tally thus far.
In his first career double-double,
Terrence Drisdom tallied 11 points in a 4-for-11 effort, with one from behind the arc and a couple of free throws, as well as 12 rebounds.
As the point leader for the Broncos tonight,
Jordan Faison went 6-for-11 from the field, and coupled with his six free throws, he finished with 18 points.
Quentin Taylor provided the most support for the Broncos from beyond the arc with three triples to his name.
Chad Haysbert proved to be the most influential underneath the basket as he led the CPP squad with 13 rebounds.
Daniel Rodriguez recorded four assists, and
Barry Bell registered three steals on the night.
The visitors were first on the board at Kellogg Gym as a jumper gave them a quick 2-0 lead. With the next six points going in the Broncos' favor, the Mustangs were forced to take a timeout to collect themselves.
Coming out of the timeout, the Broncos scored once more for good measure before a couple of buckets went the Mustangs' way. Not to be outdone, the Broncos took the largest run of the game, sinking eight-straight baskets, pulling the lead up to 19 points with the score standing at 26-7.
The away squad closed the Bronco lead a bit as they tallied 11-straight points to trail CPP by eight points. With the teams trading the next few points, the squads entered halftime with the score sitting at 36-25 in favor of the Broncos.
After much back-and-forth to begin the second half, Haysbert found himself with the ball and put up a beautiful layup to put the Broncos up by 19 again. With his layup drawing a foul, the 6-foot-8 senior made his free throw to give the home team a 20-point lead. A free throw by Faison a bit later and the Broncos pushed the lead to 21 points, the largest of the game.
As the Mustangs pushed back with a few good shots from the line, a three by
Ryan Hall pushed the Broncos back up to that 21-point lead. Two more free throws for TMC, and a layup for Drisdom and CPP saw the 21-point lead for the last time with 8:39 on the clock.
Not ready to give up yet, the Mustangs went on a seven-point run, however, the remainder of the game saw both teams trading points and ending at the final score of 72-58.
The Broncos will finish their homestand with another non-conference game, as they take on the Sea Lions of Point Loma on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
