Broncos Win 2-1, Advance To CCAA Finals!

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team is at it again. A 2-1 win over the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills advanced the Broncos to Sunday's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship game. They will play the winner of Friday's game between Cal State L.A. and Cal State Stanislaus.

Friday's match marks the first time in program history that the team has earned a playoff win, yet another first to add to the CPP record setting year.

"It was a tough match today," said head coach Yossi Raz. "Dominguez is a quality team and they kept us awake. I am very proud of my guys, they are a great team and great soccer players. It is a great feeling to earn the first playoff win in Cal Poly Pomona history."

A model of offensive efficiency, the Broncos took only one three shots in the first half. The CCAA Newcomer and Offensive Player of the Year Christian Gonzalez Diaz added his first goal of the postseason as he bulldozed right through the Toros' defense to put the Broncos up 1-0. Daniel Garcia Jr., the CPP assist leader, earned the assist as his pass over the head of a CSUDH defender got Gonzalez Diaz the ball.

CPP's tenacious defense made for a worry free half for Fernando Pablo Quevedo in the goal as none of the Toro's six shots found his hands. Both teams collected a single corner kick in the half and the countdown reached 0 in the half with the Broncos up 1-0.

As the second half began, both teams turned up the heat. A red card in the fifth minute of the half left the Toros down a player and playing catch-up with the score.

CPP's second goal of the night came as a long pass from Michael Torres found Daniel Garcia Jr. who in turn crossed to Daniel Asor open in front of the Toros' net. With only the Dominguez net-minder to worry about, Asor sent one to the goalie's right that saw the Toro dive to no avail. Garcia Jr. earned his second assist of the night.

A waning minutes foul in the Broncos' box found the CSUDH squad on the advantageous side of a penalty kick. Santos Romero of the Toros sent one low and to Pablo Quevedo's left as the shot put CSUDH on the board.

CPP had a total of eight shots on the day as two of them found the back of the net. The Toros took a total of 15 shots with one finding the net.

In the goal for the Broncos, nationally ranked goalkeeper, Pablo Quevedo collected three saves on the night as he held the Toros to one goal scored.

"Dominguez is a very dynamic and quick team," said Raz. "They are a great team and have a great coaching staff. It was a quality victory for us. We will be continuing to work hard to represent Cal Poly Pomona as best we can."

On Monday afternoon, the NCAA will air its selection show as teams are chosen to move forward into the Division II postseason. To access Monday's 4 p.m. selection show, go to www.ncaa.com/liveschedule.
