POMONA, Calif. - In a thrilling up and down match, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team topped 18th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino 3-2 at Saturday's Senior Night match in Kellogg Gym.
Combined with the Oct. 2 victory at Coussoulis Arena, the Broncos have defeated the Coyotes twice in one year for the first time since 2005. With Saturday's result, CPP improves to 14-9 overall and 12-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
The result also ended San Bernardino's five-match winning streak.
Nicoletta Stork continued her strong play, collecting 19 kills, 19 assists and 12 digs. She's reached double-digit kills in three of the last four matches.
Prior to Saturday's contest, CPP honored its four seniors:
Roxanne Cardona,
Tatiana Martinez,
Elle Moffatt and
Lauren Jones. While Stork powered the offense,
Zoe Herrera starred defensively with 30 digs.
The Broncos took a 2-0 lead in games, cruising to a 25-17 result in the first and notching a 25-22 victory in the second. After the Coyotes rallied to even the game count at 2-2, CPP showed its resiliency with a 15-12 win in the fifth and final frame.
In that fifth game, the Broncos fell behind 4-1. The home squad didn't back down from the challenge though, as a pair of Stork kills and a four-serve run at the hands of
Alina Smith helped CPP take a 6-5 lead while forcing a Coyotes' timeout.
The lead changed hands two more times but a Stork ace gave the Broncos a somewhat commanding 13-10 advantage. CSUSB pulled to within 13-12 before the Coyotes suffered an attack error and then
Deanna Blaine delivered the decisive kils.
The Broncos will return to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. road match at Cal State Monterey Bay.
