LA JOLLA, Calif. - Despite a double-double performance from senior
Ashley Lovett, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team was dealt its first loss in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Sunday in a 62-50 defeat at UC San Diego.
Lovett put together an impressive performance, as a 5-for-11 tally from the field gave her 12 points. She also pulled down four offensive and 12 defensive rebounds to complete the double-double effort, as her 16 rebounds matched a career best.
Lauren Goecke added three of the Broncos' eight steals while
Ariel Marsh contributed 10 points in the contest.
With Sunday's result, CPP falls to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in CCAA play. The Tritons improve to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in league action.
The lead never shifted in CPP's favor, although a late run in the first half helped the Broncos rally to tie the score 28-28 entering halftime.
At the start of the contest, UCSD jumped out to a 4-0 edge before a layup by
Lauren Goecke put the Broncos on the board with their first points.
The Tritons continued to build their momentum and widended the advantage to 22-8. That was the largest deficit of the half but CPP didn't back down and put together a late run to close out the first half.
Leading up to the break, the Broncos went on a 20-6 spurt to get back to even.
A three-pointer from the Tritons opened the second-half scoring and the host squad managed to build up a nine-point advantage with 14 minutes to play in regulation.
After that run, the Broncos were unable to pull even again. The final 13 minutes saw the two teams trade points, with the Tritons holding the slight edge.
Mian Dingle put down the final point with three seconds to play, wrapping up the final score at 62-50.
CPP returns to action on Friday, Jan. 2, with a home game at Kellogg Gym. The Broncos host Chico State at 5:30 p.m. in the first of a doubleheader.
