LA JOLLA, Calif. - With a thrilling road game at UC San Diego coming down to the wire, senior
Terrence Drisdom knocked down the game-winning jumper with 19 seconds left to lift the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team to a 63-62 victory.
Â
With the win, the Broncos improve to a record of 7-2, which includes a 3-1 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Â
The loss gives the Tritons a 2-1 record in conference, with a 4-3 overall mark thus far in the 2014-15 season.
Â
Drisdom's clutch performance included 16 points and seven rebounds in the game. On the Tritons' final possession, he helped shut down the Tritons' offensive effort with a block and a rebound, leading to the final 63-62 score.
Â
Jordan Faison proved to be the top scorer from the field, going 10-for-16 in a 24-point effort. He also added a pair of blocks.
Barry Bell dished out five assists in the game,
Daniel Rodriguez earned three steals and eight boards, and the Broncos only committed 11 turnovers as a team.
Â
The Tritons were first on the board, as a successful shot from beyond the arc gave them a 3-0 lead. Drisdom's first shot came soon afterwards cutting the UCSD lead to one.
Â
A few baskets later, Rodriguez tied the game up at 5-5 as he capitalized on a fastbreak with a layup. The next ten minutes showed the Broncos holding the slight advantage over the home team. Shots by Faison and Drisdom gave CPP a five-point lead.
Â
With the clock ticking down, the two teams continued to trade the lead. The Broncos' last lead in the first half came with a Faison dunk, as the score showed 27-25 in CPP's favor. A 5-0 run for the Tritons gave them the tie and the 30-27 lead heading into halftime.
Â
The second half provided a solid opportunity for both teams to earn their keep. CPP shot 57.14% as a team in the half, while limiting the Tritons to 46%.
Â
A pair of good free throws put the Tritons up by five, then a layup by Faison and a three by
Chad Haysbert tied it up again.
Â
When one team scored, the other always answered back. Fast-forward to the waning minutes of the game, and a 62-58 lead in the Tritons' favor.
Â
A Bell layup and subsequent point after brings CPP within a point of the Tritons. With the clock reading 19, Drisdom made the jumper, giving CPP the 63-62 score that the game would end with.
However, that jumper didn't finish the game. With two seconds remaining, the UCSD offense had a chance to go ahead, and they attempted a jumper. The 6-foot-5 Drisdom blocked the shot and collected a rebound to end the game.
Â
The Broncos' next game will be at Kellogg Gym on Friday, January 2, as they host the Wildcats of Chico State at 7:30 p.m.
