HAYWARD, Calif. - In the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team's second game of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play Friday, the nationally-ranked Broncos' defense came to life. The Broncos secured a 31-point victory with a 83-52 win over the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay.
Four Broncos scored in double digits and
Jordan Faison led the way. The junior from Lake Forest went 6-for-12 from the field with two three-pointers and 5-for-10 from the line, good for 19 points on the night.
Quentin Taylor registered the highest shooting percentage of the four Broncos in double figures, going 4-for-5 from the field, with a pair of threes and a couple of free throws.
Daniel Rodriguez led CPP with six rebounds, and right on his tail was
Rhon Mitchell with five boards to his name.
Terrence Drisdom provided four assists for the Broncos while adding 11 points on four baskets.
The best way to describe the game Friday would be simply to say it was a series of streaks. To start the game, the Pioneers sank a jumper, putting them up 2-0 on CPP.
Then came the Broncos' first run, as a jumper by Faison and then back-to-back threes by
Barry Bell and Rodriguez put CPP up 8-2. After that, the Pioneers came back with two baskets inside the arc, cutting the Broncos' lead to two.
After a CSUEB layup, the visitors started on their next run, which ended up being good for seven points. East Bay answered back with a 5-0 run, then the Broncos added six-straight buckets to pull their lead up to 15 points. At that point, CPP held a 26-11 advantage.
Heading up to halftime and continuing just after, the Broncos went on a 12-point run, increasing the score to 47-21. In that run, CPP had a pair of triples, a couple of free throws, a layup, and one of the two massive dunks by
Chad Haysbert.
With 15:24 left on the clock, Haysbert's second dunk came as the result of a well-timed dish by Mitchell that drew both defenders to him leaving the hoop open for the 6-foosenior to take full advantage of, and take advantage of it he did.
With the remainder of the game going much the same way, CPP continued to tack onto their lead, with the largest lead being by 35 points, which they held twice.
Ryan Hall dropped in a layup for the final basket of the game and that closed out the 31-point victory.
The Broncos will return to action on Saturday night at 7:30 as they will challenge the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters in The Kelp Bed. CSUMB secured a 64-62 victory over the Tritons of UC San Diego on Friday and currently own a 4-2 overall tally, with a 1-0 mark in the CCAA.
