Point Loma
Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – Enjoying their new home of Scolinos Field, a trio of Bronco newcomers fueled a ninth-inning rally Monday as the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team stormed back to earn a 7-6 victory over Point Loma Nazarene.

Trailing 5-0 early and then 6-3 in the late innings, CPP rallied for two runs in the eighth and the decisive two scores in the ninth.

Matt Muñoz started the final inning with a single and to cap off the rally, freshman Steven Andrade provided the game-winning hit as he lined a single up the middle to score David Armendariz. The Broncos' final two hits - one from Armendariz to tie up the game and the next from Andrade to end it - both came with two outs.

CPP improves to 3-0 while completing the three-game sweep of the Sea Lions. On Saturday, the Broncos swept a doubleheader at PLNU in San Diego.

The visiting Sea Lions boasted a balanced attack through the early innings Monday, scoring twice in the second and another two times in the fifth. PLNU extended its lead to 5-0 in the sixth when Trey Hunt tripled down the leftfield line to bring Lucas DiCiccio across the plate.

CPP senior outfielder Chris Carlson got the host squad on the board in the sixth, lining a double to the right-center gap to plate Muñoz and Trevor Magno. Later in the inning,a groundout from Armendariz allowed Carlson to score and trim the margin to 5-3.

Despite the Sea Lions adding another run in the seventh, the Broncos stole back the momentum in the bottom of the eighth. Michael Johnson and Joseph Eusebio started the rally with back-to-back hits. Armendariz followed with another RBI groundout and with two outs, Nick Cooksey lined a single through the right side to make it a one-run game, 6-5 in favor of PLNU.

The Sea Lions had a solid chance to add an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Anthony Torres singled with runners on base but Armendariz deliverd a powerful throw to the plate to keep the score at 6-5. Similarly to the eighth, CPP got its leadoff runner on in the bottom of the ninth in Muñoz and then Armendariz and Andrade combined for the late heroics.

The Broncos' bullpen once again played a key part in the team's success. Senior righthander R.J. Shanks entered the game with two outs in the top of the ninth and the bases loaded. The San Diego native induced a popup out from PLNU designated hitter Kellen Sheppard to set the stage for the CPP dramatics in the bottom half of the inning.

The Broncos will return to action Friday as they host Dixie State at 2 p.m. at Scolinos Field.
