Bethell Leads 1st-Place Broncos to Victory on Sunday

Box Score | HAYWARD, Calif. - The 10th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team rolled to a 7-2 win Sunday at Cal State East Bay to split the road series and remain in first place atop the conference standings.

Sophomore lefthander Max Bethell picked up his league-leading fifth win while catcher Mike Philp contributed three RBI. Joseph Eusebio and Nick Cooksey also posted multi-hit performances in the heart of the CPP lineup.

With the result, the Broncos now stand at 19-6 overall and 13-6 (.684) in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). In second place behind CPP is Chico State, a team that went 3-1 this weekend against Cal State L.A. to improve to 8-4 in league play for a winning percentage of .667.

Eusebio, a senior from Walnut, put together a stellar week offensively in Hayward. He went 6-for-18 at the plate with four runs scored as his season batting average is hovering at .347, which ranks 15th in the CCAA.

He got the Broncos' offense going in the top of the first on Sunday, lining a single to right center that scored leadoff hitter Bo Walter. CPP extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Philp singled up the middle to bring in Steven Andrade and Cooksey.

Bethell cruised during the middle innings, retiring seven-straight batters on one point. Eusebio led off the sixth with a single and the Broncos managed to score two runs on just one hit in the inning, thanks to a pair of Pioneer errors.

CPP reliever J.J. Franklin threw the final 1.1 innings of the contest and didn't allow a hit or walk while striking out one.

The Broncos will get a break from CCAA play during Finals Week but CPP will return to action on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader at Cal Baptist starting at 2 p.m. The Lancers are 19-7 overall and 5-7 in PacWest play.
