Miami Marlins Select Steven Farnworth

MIAMI – With their 23rd-round pick in the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the Miami Marlins selected Cal Poly Pomona junior righthanded pitcher Steven Farnworth on Saturday afternoon.

As the 677th overall pick, he is the 85th player in the history of CPP baseball to be selected in the MLB draft and the first Bronco to be picked by the Marlins' organization.

"It's unlike anything ever experienced," Farnworth said after being chosen by the Marlins. "Having the opportunity to play professional baseball has been by dream since I was a kid and now that I have that chance, I couldn't be happier."

Farnworth joined two other teammates in getting selected on Saturday. The Cleveland Indians picked David Armendariz while the Toronto Blue Jays picked up Chris Carlson. Three CPP draftees is the highest amount since the 2001 season.

Through the 2014 campaign that featured the Broncos reaching the conference and NCAA playoffs, Farnworth served as the ace of the pitching staff. He threw 85 innings, going 6-3 with a 3.07 earned run average. Farnworth allowed just 14 walks and struck out 51.

Now a total of five Bronco student-athletes have been selected in the MLB Draft during the tenure of head coach Randy Betten. Prior to 2014, the other two were Travis Taijeron as an 18th-round pick by the New York Mets in the 2011 draft and Geoff Broussard as a 23rd-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2012 draft.
