CPP Defeats Nationally Ranked Metro State

POMONA, Calif.Daisy Duran scored her first two collegiate goals Friday, lifting the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team to a 3-1 home win over 18th-ranked Metro State at Kellogg Field.

It marked the seventh all-time meeting between the two squads and with Friday's victory, CPP owns a 4-2-1 advantage in the series. Metro State entered the week at No. 18 in the NCAA Division II Top 25 poll and with Friday's result, falls to 2-1 overall.

"Collectively as a team, I thought we played well and showed urgency," Broncos' head coach Mike Dibbini said. "All the players contributed and created depth. The season is still young so we'll take the positives and negatives from today's games."

Duran scored early in the first half and CPP took a 1-0 edge into halftime. Then, the Broncos put the game out of reach with a pair of second-half scores before the visiting Roadrunners' squad managed to get on the board in the 89th minute to make it a 3-1 result.

CPP held a slim 6-4 shot advantage at the midway point but stepped up the pressure in the second period, attempting 14 shots in the final 45 minutes as opposed to Metro State's one.

Duran notched her first score of the game after receiving a through pass into the box from Indra Arteaga. To start the second half scoring, Amanda Gomez knocked in a header after a well-placed corner kick by Duran. On Duran's second score, Melissa Martinez proved to be the catalyst on the play as she created a breakaway against the Roadrunners' goalkeeper. At the last moment, she found Duran sprinting into the box and dished off a nice pass for the freshman to finish the play.

Now 3-1 on the season, the Broncos will return to action Sunday with a matchup against Regis. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
