POMONA, Calif. – Starting and ending Saturday's match with plenty of offensive firepower, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team secured a 2-0 home win over Dixie State.
The Broncos recorded their first goal at the 2:39 mark to set the tone. Just about two and a half minutes before the final buzzer, CPP struck for an insurance score before finishing with the 2-0 result.
With the result, the Broncos improve to 5-1 overall while Dixie falls to 1-3-1. CPP avenged an early-season loss to the Red Storm in Utah.
The Broncos didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard Saturday.
Arika Ontiveros worked to get the ball in open space along the left side and fired an attempt toward the target. It curled right of the far post but
Daisy Duran timed a run perfectly and lined an easy close-range shot into the net for the 1-0 lead.
CPP put together a pair of great chances later in the half. Duran sent a cross to the far post for
Stacey Atwater, who knocked a header that was saved. A few minutes later,
Alison Sauve sent a pass up the field that led to a breakaway for
Melissa Martinez. Her shot was stopped by Red Storm netminder Stacie Gubler as well.
The Broncos finished with a 20-3 shot advantage over the Red Storm and one of the final chances put CPP ahead 2-0. Duran sent a long cross into the box and Martinez tapped a header that rolled past the goalie and across the line.
Through five games at Kellogg Field this season, the Broncos have outscored their opponents 14-1.
With non-conference play complete, CPP will return to action on Friday with the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener against nationally-ranked Cal State San Bernardino. Kickoff at Kellogg Field is set for 4:30 p.m.
