CPP Tops Humboldt in Double Overtime, 81-79

POMONA, Calif. - With an epic 81-79 double-overtime win over Humboldt on Friday, Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball has moved into a four-team tie for first place in the conference standings.

The Broncos trailed by seven points with 16 seconds to go in regulation. A pair of costly turnovers from the Jacks helped return possession to CPP and a Jordan Faison three-pointer at the four-second mark ultimately sent the game into overtime.

The two squads scored seven points apiece in the first extra period, forcing yet another overtime. Faison knocked down another clutch shot and Terrence Drisdom added late free throws, pushing the Broncos to the 81-79 win.

Faison finished with 21 points to go along with 12 rebounds, while Drisdom also notched a double-double at 15 points and 11 boards.

Joining that pair of Broncos in double figures were Barry Bell with 15 points and Ryan Hall adding 10 points of his own. CPP forced 21 turnovers from the Jacks while Drisdom and Bell contributed five steals each.

With the result, the Broncos improve to 12-4 overall and 8-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), moving into a first-place tie with Cal State Stanislaus, UC San Diego and Chico State. CPP will host Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on Greek Spirit Night at Kellogg Gym.

The margin between Humboldt and the Broncos never widened into double digits. HSU's largest edge was nine points - 40-31 - with 18:49 to play in the second half.

Early in the opening half, Hall tallied five-straight points to give CPP a 9-7 edge. The Jacks led later in the first half but a last-second layup by Bell pulled the score back to even going into halftime, 31-31.

Austin Bryan knocked down three-consecutive triples to open the second half as HSU took a 40-31 advantage. CPP bounced right back with six points of its own with the run initiated by a Daniel Rodriguez basket and capped off by a Hall three-pointer.

The Broncos' ability to erase a seven-point deficit with 16 seconds left proved to be the highlight of the game and that performance brought the CPP fans to their feet.
