CPP Wins 60-57 for Kamansky's 300th Victory

POMONA, Calif. – In his 15th season at the helm of the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball program, head coach Greg Kamansky earned his 300th win Saturday with a 60-57 victory over Cal State Stanislaus.

"I am very fortunate to work at such a dedicated university," said Kamansky. "It has been a pleasure to be able to work for as long as I have with the help of Damion Hill and all of my coaching staffs. Each day I know I have the support of the athletic department, President Ortiz, and the administration of the school. It's a great feeling to be a part of this family."

Kamansky has secured an all-time record of 300-120 in his time at CPP, good for a .714 win percentage.

Broncos' senior Terrence Drisdom proved to be the high scorer for either side in Saturday's contest, as his 7-for-12 performance provided the home squad with 22 points. He also added eight rebounds, three assists, and a steal as well.

Jordan Faison contributed 15 points while Quentin Taylor and Barry Bell pitched in a pair of assists.

Securing the win, Cal Poly Pomona now holds an 8-3 season tally with a 4-2 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Stanislaus falls to a 7-4 record with a 4-2 mark in conference.

At first glance in the game, it seemed the Broncos would run away with it. They scored first, and no matter how much the Warriors fought back, CPP always seemed one step ahead.

Entering halftime though, the Broncos held a slim three-point lead and Drisdom was the only player for either side with double-digit points.

Coming out of the break, the two squads rekindled the fire, and points arrived quickly. An immediate three-pointer from the Warriors brought it back to a 27-27 tie, but two back-to-back buckets from Drisdom put CPP ahead four.

From there points came like a pendulum, CPP, Stanislaus, CPP, Stanislaus, back-and-forth until the clock read 4:23. At that point the Warriors enjoyed their first lead of the game and proceeded to quickly add four more, giving them the 56-51 advantage.

Faison then went on a tear, scoring four consecutive times, vaulting the Broncos back into the lead and up two with just over a minute to play. In that run, a beautiful behind-the-back pass from Bell left Faison with an open look for the tie. Soon after, Faison swiped it from the CSUS offense and gave the Broncos the go-ahead point.

"I'm proud of the guys," Kamansky said. "They fought back when they were down five late in game. Stanislaus is a good team and anytime you can win against a team like that, you can be proud of it."

Shey Mataele, one of the Warriors' three double-digit shooters, sank a free throw with 48 seconds left and that proved to be the last point for CSUS. A last-second three-point attempt from the Warriors fell off the mark and Drisdom grabbed the rebound. After being fouled, he sank a pair of free throws to push the final result to 60-57.

The Broncos return to action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. as they host the San Francisco State Gators. As part of the "Pack the Gym" doubleheader, the first 100 CPP students to the women's game at 5:30 will receive a Habit Burger voucher and a Carl's Jr. foam finger.
