POMONA, Calif. - In front of a packed crowd of 1,673, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team put together an inspired effort and captured a 64-32 home win over San Francisco State.
With the win, the Broncos improve to a 9-3 overall record, which includes a 5-2 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). SFSU drops to a 6-5 record with a 4-3 tally in conference.\
Friday's result put CPP in a three-way tie for first. The Broncos will return to action Saturday at 7:30 as they host the Sonoma State Seawolves in Kellogg Gym. It will be a battle for first, as CPP, Sonoma, and Cal State Stanislaus all currently have a hand on the No. 1 spot. Senior
Terrence Drisdom was the lone player in the game to reach double figures, as a 5-for-10 performance from the field gave him 13 points. Three other Broncos were within a basket of double digits as
Chad Haysbert and
Barry Bell both recorded nine, and
Jordan Faison put up eight.
Daniel Rodriguez dished out the most help in the game as he provided five assists. As a team, CPP chalked up 13 assists while holding the Gators to eight. The Green and Gold clad Broncos also committed just eight turnovers in the game while forcing 16 on the visitors.
On the defensive side of the game, the Broncos pulled down 40 rebounds while allowing only 26 for SFSU.
The Broncos had a strong offensive showing, as their 22-for-52 shooting tally from the field made for a 42.3-percent performance. CPP's 64 points proved to be the highest total that SFSU has allowed in any CCAA matchup this season. Prior to the game, the Broncos had the No. 4 ranked defense in the country, while the Gators sat at No. 5.
As the game opened and the first point on the board was a successful free throw by Bell, the Broncos continuously kept the Gators in the rearview mirror. Three different times in the game CPP put together double-digit runs.
The home squad's largest run came midway through the first half. It began with a Drisdom jumper, then subsequent points by
Quentin Taylor, Faison, Haysbert, and Rodriguez sent the Broncos on a 15-point tear. That pushed CPP to a 19-2 lead over the Gators with 9:51 to play in the half.
Through the game, CPP scored 26 points off turnovers and totaled 20 second-chance points.
