Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Broncos Clinch Playoff Spot With 2-1 Victory!

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team secured a 2-1 victory against the Humboldt State Jacks on Thursday. With the win, the CPP squad has clinched a playoff berth in the CCAA Soccer Tournament. CPP has just one more regular season game, which will take place on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. against the nationally-ranked Sonoma State Seawolves.

The win improved the Broncos to an overall tally of 9-5-2, complete with a 6-4-1 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. Humboldt State, after drawing a loss, now holds a 9-6-2 season record, including a 5-4-2 showing in conference play.

Looking at the first half of the game, other than an 8-1 shot advantage for the Broncos and a yellow card on the visiting Jacks, not too much happened.

The action happened in the second half.

With the total game clock reading 54:07, Daisy Duran put the Broncos on the board. She received a pass from Tori Tappero from just outside the box, then was able to send a long shot to the right of the diving Jacks' goalkeeper and into the back of the net. It was her fifth goal of the season and Tappero's third assist.

The Green and Gold's one goal lead would not remain so for long though as just two minutes after Duran's goal, the visitors were on the advantageous side of a free kick that reached the goal via the upper left corner of the net. The goal was by Bridget Daley, the Jacks' goal leader with six.

There remained a tie on the scoreboard for the next 12 minutes, which is until Amanda Gomez went on offense. While she doesn't receive credit for the goal, Gomez was the reason CPP's final goal was scored. A strong offensive push by the senior got her right against the Jacks' goalkeeper, and a shot from her was blocked by HSU, then a member of the Jacks' defense attempted to clear the ball but instead sent it into her own goal. The goal was the Broncos' go ahead goal at 2-1.

Total in the game, the Green and Gold outshot the opposition 16-6. The Jacks' keeper posted five saves and CPP's Ricki Ives earned two saves herself in the contest.
