Saturday Loss Places CPP at 5th Seed in CCAA

POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team fell to the No. 9-ranked Sonoma State Seawolves on Saturday 2-1. A strong matchup ensued until the visiting SSU squad posted a goal and quickly followed with another.

There were 10 seniors honored for the Broncos' women's soccer program on Saturday. Nicole Killigrew, Megan Kisslan, Stacey Atwater, Melissa Martinez, Amanda Gomez, Ariana Fleischman, Sam Jones, Reanne Macon, Rachel Killigrew, and Briana Nesbit all played in their final regular season match for the Green and Gold.

The Broncos, with the loss, now hold a 9-6-2 mark on the regular season, complete with a 6-5-1 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). This is the first season for the Broncos' program under head coach Vanessa Valentine.

Sonoma State, finished the regular season without allowing a single loss in conference play. Their final tally was 10-0-2 in the CCAA en route to a season record of 13-1-3.

The defensive prowess of both squads was showcased through 3/4 of the game as neither team was able to put the ball in the net, despite a number of attempts. The first goal of the afternoon came from Katie Mohr of the Seawolves who found the net in the game's 73rd minute.

Playing the role of host, the CPP squad barely got time to settle down before the Seawolves' offense secured their second goal. The second goal of the contest came at the foot of Bella Amyx. She had a one-v-one matchup with the Green and Gold's keeper and came out victorious.

In the waning minutes of the game, the Broncos posted their lone goal in the game. Amanda Gomez, one of the 10 seniors honored at Saturday's Senior Day Festivities provided her teammates with her second goal of the season. Hailey James sent a pass from the right side of the field to Melissa Martinez who in turn passed it to Gomez.

The Broncos' securing of a playoff berth on Friday left only the question of where? After other CCAA games ended, the Broncos took the No. 5 seed and will head to UC San Diego to challenge the Tritons in La Jolla on Tuesday at 7 p.m. For more updates on the Broncos' postseason run, follow at www.broncoathletics.com/ccaa
