Broncos Fall to UCSD Tritons in Four Sets

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team fell in four sets to the hometown UC San Diego Tritons on Friday. CPP took the second set, but the Tritons won the other three. The Broncos now sit at fourth place in the CCAA.

The loss places the Broncos at 13-10 thus far in 2015 with a 9-6 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Tritons now hold a 10-5 record in conference play, en route to an overall mark of 14-9 on the season.

Leading the Broncos in the match in the difference categories were Deanna Blaine, Christen Williams, Alina Smith, and Zoe Herrera. Blaine provided the Green and Gold with a team-leading 15 kills in the match. With 7 kills of her own, Williams secured a team-high .313 attack percentage. There were 25 assists from Smith for the Broncos on the evening, and Herrera secured an impressive 29 digs in the contest.

The first set of the match showed the hometown Tritons come hot out of the gate as they gained a two-point lead, and never looked back. They went on a 5-1 run that led to an early CPP timeout. From there, the UCSD squad steadily increased its lead. At two different points, the home team held a 15-point advantage. CPP managed to gain a point back, but the final score of the game was 25-11 in UCSD's favor.

In set number two, the Green and Gold made an impression. After a 2-2 tie, a Blaine kill put the Broncos in front, and CPP carried the lead through the remainder of the set. The Broncos put together several multi-point runs that led to a final score of 25-14 in the second set.

After exiting the break, the match was back on. Early on, it was an evenly matched set, as the teams were tied at 4-4. The Tritons pulled ahead a few points however and from there held their lead. A nine-point run helped bolster the hometown victory in the third set as UCSD secured it 25-14.

The fourth and final set of the match again showed an early even match. The Broncos and Tritons saw five ties, the final of which was at 13-13. However, a UCSD jump provided them with an 8-1 run that the Green and Gold could not recover from. The final set went to the Tritons 25-17.

CPP will return to action Saturday, Oct. 31 as they play the role of visitor at Coussoulis Arena to the No. 19 Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes. CSUSB hosted the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters on Friday and won 3-1. It will be the third meeting that the Broncos and Coyotes have had this season, each team has one once.
