Despite Loss, Herrera Lands Atop Record Books

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team lost in four sets to the No. 19 Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes on Saturday. It was a close match as the Coyotes won the first set 25-23, the third 25-17, and the fourth 25-21, and the visiting Broncos secured the second set 25-22.

With 29 digs in Saturday's contest, senior Libero Zoe Herrera lands herself at the top of the CPP career digs leaderboard. The previous record was 1,517, and  prior to the match, Herrera needed just 21 digs.

With the loss in the match, the CPP squad now holds a season tally of 13-11, complete with a 9-7 showing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Coyotes improve their conference record to 14-2 en route to a season showing of 21 wins and three losses.

Three members of the Broncos' squad posted double-digit kills in the match. Kristen Hamlin and Deanna Blaine each had 12 kills, while Christen Williams recorded 10. Alina Smith and Nicoletta Stork each provided the Green and Gold with assists numbering in the 20s as Smith had 24 and Stork registered 22.

To kick things off at Coussoulis Arena, the CPP squad started off the first set with a 5-0 run. The nationally-ranked Coyotes would slowly work their way back, post a pair of points for each of the Broncos' next six points.  With a score of 13-10 in CPP's favor, the hometown CSUSB squad went on a run that resulted in a 23-23 tie in the set. A pair of points for the Coyotes and they took the set 25-23.

The second set of the match went in the Broncos' way. An evenly matched set saw nine score ties, and after the last one at 14-14, the Broncos took a lead that proved too much for the home team to come back from. The Green and Gold finished the set with an advantageous 25-22 score.

Coming out of the break, the third set had the largest point discrepancy. An immediate six-point run by the Coyotes was answered back by four-straight from the Broncos. A steady stream of points for both squads came from there but the final ones came for the San Bernardino native squad. A CPP service and attack error provided CSUSB with the final two points to secure the 25-17 win in set three.

The fourth and final set, while showing a consistent influx of points from both teams, went in the CSUSB way as well. Once the Coyotes took their first lead with the scoreboard reading 2-1 in their favor, CPP was unable to change the lead. Both squads longest runs of the final set were three points. The final run of the game for the Coyotes proved to be a three pointer. The final set went to the Coyotes 25-21.

CPP will return to action on Nov. 6 as they head north to San Francisco State to play visitor in their trip to the Bay. After the 7 p.m. start at SFSU, the Broncos will play Cal State East Bay at 7 p.m. on Nov. 7.
