HAYWARD, Calif. – With a scoreless first half, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team found their stride with a goal very early in the second half followed by another with under 20 minutes to play.
With the win, the Broncos improved to an overall 6-3-1 mark on the 2015 season, complete with a 3-2 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Pioneers record is now a 4-8 with a 2-5 record in conference play.
The first half of the game remained scoreless through all 45 minutes. Looking at both team's shot tally, just five attempts were made by the offense. CPP posted two shots and the hometown Pioneers recorded three.
In the half,
Ricki Ives, the Green and Gold's starting goalie earned two saves.
Upon the start of the second half, the Broncos appeared to immediately find a groove as
Melissa Martinez posted her second goal of the season. She received a pass from
Stacey Atwater in the center of the field, and chipped her shot into the top left corner of the Pioneer's goal.
Scoring her first goal of the season in the game's 72nd minute was
Reanne Macon, the senior from Lake Forest dribbled from the middle of the field to 10 yards out. From there she sent a long shot over the keeper's head that beat her under the crossbar and put up CPP's second goal of the game.
Just under two and a half minutes later, the home town Pioneers posted their first goal of the game as a corner kick provided Kianna Lamont with the needed opportunity to head it into the CPP goal. The goal was her second of the season.
The game's final numbers showed the Broncos outshoot the NorCal opponents 9-6. Ives posted a total of three saves in the contest. Macon and
Amanda Gomez each posted two shots for the Green and Gold.
The Broncos will return to action on Sunday as they play the role of visitor to the Stanislaus State Warriors. Game time is set to begin at 2 p.m. at Warrior Stadium in Turlock.
