SAN DIEGO - The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos secured a final-seconds victory against the Point Loma Sea Lions on Wednesday after a three pointer from
Jordan Faison gave them the 54-53 lead.
With just under five seconds to play, the senior received a pass from
Barry Bell and sent a long shot from outside the arc to put the Green and Gold up by one in the game.
The shot enabled Faison to reach the 20-point mark in the contest and lead the entire field in the point category. His shooting tally was 8-for-13 and he made three of four free throws. With his 6-foot-7 frame, the Lake Forest native also boosted the Broncos defensively as he led both teams with a total of nine rebounds.
Second to Faison on the CPP squad in points was fellow senior
Francois Tchoyi, the native Cameroonian provided his Green and Gold teammates with 11 points in the game and a pair of rebounds.
Jeremy Dennis recorded seven points and seven boards in the matchup.
The Broncos secured three blocks and six steals in the game. Bell led his teammates with a pair of steals himself and also secured seven points. The Green and Gold were impressive around the hoop as they scored 36 of their points from inside the paint and on the other half of the court limited the hometown Sea Lions to just 18 points from inside theirs.
Despite an early lead by the hometown Sea Lions, the two squads seemed to be very evenly matched. At no point was there more than a six-point margin in the score. The largest lead that PLNU secured was six points with 13:19 to go in the first half.
In the first half, the Broncos topped the Sea Lions shooting percentage by seven percent and out-rebounded them 22-16. When the first half came to a close, the two squads were locked in a 23-23 tie.
Both teams improved their shooting efficiency in the second half, rounding out around the 42-43% mark. In the contest, the Broncos were vastly superior on turnovers, scoring 17 points to the Sea Lion's two.
CPP will return to action on Saturday as they host Winona State at Kellogg Arena at 7:00 p.m. The game will be just the fourth time the teams have met in their history and the first since head coach
Greg Kamansky's first season at the helm of the Broncos in 2000-01.
The matchup, as it will be the Green and Gold's first home game of the season has a special promotion. The first 100 fans in attendance at the game will receive a free schedule poster courtesy of CPP athletics.
