HAYWARD, Calif- With a 74-64 victory over Cal State East Bay, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team has set a Bronco record for the best start in program history. CPP is now 10-0 after topping the Pioneers on Tuesday.
Â
Â
In the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) the Broncos are currently 4-0 and remain one of five teams in NCAA Division II men's basketball that have yet to draw a loss.
Â
Â
The loss for the Pioneers drops them to an overall tally of 4-5 complete with a 1-2 showing in conference play.
Â
Â
On Tuesday, the latest NABC Coaches Poll came out that had the Broncos as the fifth-ranked team in the country. CPP will return to action on Saturday as they host Pacific Union in Kellogg Arena at 6:30 p.m.
Â
Â
Leading the game in points was
Jordan Faison as the senior from Lake Forest tallied 24 points on a 7-for-12 showing complete with a three pointer and a stellar 9-of-10 free throws hitting their mark.
Â
Â
Faison also secured a tied for the team lead in rebounds as he and
Chris Sullivan each tallied seven boards in the contest. Sullivan was third on team in the game with a total of 11 points. Second on the squad with 17 points of his own was
Jeremy Dennis.
Â
Â
Each member of the Cal Poly Pomona men's team contributed in the contest as everyone tallied at least a pair of points. Bench players from the Green and Gold added 14 points in the game as the CPP defense limited the hometown Pioneers' bench players to six points.
Â
Â
In the contest, the Broncos recorded a 51.3% shooting from the field while holding the CSUEB squad to 35.6% shooting.
Â
Â
The Broncos opened the scoring as a jumper from Faison found its mark.
Barry Bell then added a layup of his own to give the Broncos a 4-0 lead. CPP's offense stayed hot throughout however and never allowed the Pioneers to gain the lead.Â
Â
Â
In the waning minutes of the first half and into the beginning of the second half, the Broncos registered their largest run of the contest with a nine-point spree. Â CPP's defense prevented the hometown's offense from putting together more than a six-point spree.
Â
Â
In the second half, the closest that the Pioneers ever got to matching the Broncos' score was at the 5:41 mark when they sat just four back of the Green and Gold. The Broncos immediately added three baskets though and held at least an eight-point lead through the rest of the game. Â
