POMONA, Calif. – As the 2015 calendar year winds to a close, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team looks ahead to the New Year. In the first week of 2016, the Broncos will play a pair of games against SoCal rivals.
To ring in the new year, the Green and Gold will first head to Coussoulis Arena where they will face off against the host Cal State San Bernardino. The Broncos head into the contest sporting an overall 4-7 mark, complete with an even 2-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Coyotes have secured a 1-3 mark in conference play en route to an overall 4-4 record.
The matchup between the two squads marks the first of two set games that they have this season and the first since February of last season. In that meeting, the Broncos earned an 85-80 victory in overtime. That win was the second win against the Coyotes of the season as they also topped them 61-57 at Kellogg Arena.
With the two wins over CSUSB last season, the Broncos hold an advantage in the all-time series, winning 37 to the Coyotes' 15. The New Years Day contest for the Green and Gold will take place at 5:30 p.m.
After the game on the first, the CPP squad will head to La Jolla to challenge the UC San Diego Tritons at RIMAC Arena at 5:30 on Jan. 2. The UCSD squad has had a great season thus far. Aside from going 3-1 in the CCAA, they have compiled an overall 8-2 mark on the season.
The two squads split the games played in the last season as the Broncos won the first 82-71, but were topped by the Tritons 62-50 in the second. The all-time series between the two shows the Green and Gold with a very slight advantage, winning 16 of the contests while the Tritons have won 15.
Leading the Broncos' offense is freshman
Jordyn Shane, she has tallied 146 points and averages 13.3 per game. Another newcomer to the Green and Gold,
Priscilla Brooks leads the Broncos' defense as she has tallied 92 rebounds to this point.
As a team, the Broncos have proven more accurate than the opposition, sinking nearly 40% of their shots from the field.
After the Broncos play the Coyotes and Tritons, they will head back to Kellogg Arena to host the Warriors of Stanislaus State and the Chico State Wildcats.
