POMONA, Calif. – With an undefeated record throughout the start of the 2015-16 season, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team will continue their season on New Years Day.
The Green and Gold have thus far secured a stellar 11-0 record, earning them the No. 5 national ranking, according to the Dec. 29 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll. The Broncos also remain as one of just five teams to have gone through the start of the season without drawing a loss.
To celebrate the arrival of 2016, the CPP squad will head to Coussoulis Arena to challenge the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The contest will mark the first of the New Year as the Green and Gold attempt to secure win No. 12 against the 3-5 Coyotes who have thus far struggled to find a win in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
During the 2014-15 season, the Broncos and the Coyotes faced off twice, and the CPP squad emerged victorious from both games. First, the Broncos topped CSUSB 66-54, then turned around and defeated them 60-36. The all-time series between both squads stands at 28-23 in CPP's favor.
The Broncos are tied at the helm of the conference with the UC San Diego Tritons which makes the contest on the second all the more exciting. After the Broncos challenge the CSUSB team on Friday, they will head to La Jolla to play the 9-1 Tritons who remain the only other team that has not los in conference play.
Saturday's matchup will take place at RIMAC Arena at 7:30 p.m. and promises to be a good game. Looking at last season, the two squads played each other twice and split the series.
During the first meeting of the 2014-15 season, the Tritons topped CPP 69-66 and then the second meeting the Green and Gold won 63-62. The all-time series does stand pretty heavily in the Broncos' favor at 25-8 though and assuming the Friday contests go their way, the two squads will be fighting for a perfect record in the CCAA.
On Friday, the Tritons will have another tough matchup though as they challenge the Humboldt State Jacks who are currently tied for third in conference play with a 3-1 record en route to an overall 9-1 mark.
After the road trip, the Broncos will return to Kellogg Arena to host the Stanislaus State Warriors and the Chico State Wildcats.
