POMONA, Calif. - With a 4-0 start to the 2015 season, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team will challenge local rival Azusa Pacific this weekend in a two-game series.
The Broncos and Cougars will play in Azusa Friday with a 5 p.m. first pitch. Then on Saturday, CPP will play its home opener at Scolinos Field starting at 12 p.m.
Friday's game will feature an impressive pitching matchup, pitting Broncos' junior
Cody Ponce and APU junior Josh Staumont. Both are projected as first-round selections in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft.
Last weekend, CPP traveled to Dixie State and secured a four-game sweep over the Red Storm. The Broncos then swept the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) weekly honors as
J.J. Franklin and
Ryan Webberley earned Pitcher and Player of the Week recognition.
Franklin secured two saves in Utah to raise his career total to 11, matching and then breaking the school record. Webberley batted .571 in the first week, going 8-for-14 at the plate with five runs and six runs batted in.
Once the series with APU is complete, the Broncos will begin CCAA play on Thursday, Feb. 19, to start a four-game set with Cal State San Bernardino.
Canned Food DriveDuring the week of Feb. 16 through Feb. 22, the Broncos are collecting canned goods as part of the CCAA drive to help local food banks. Fans are encouraged to donate canned food items at the basketball doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 20 and then the baseball and basketball games on Saturday, Feb. 21.
HomecomingThe Cal Poly Pomona Homecoming will take place on Saturday, Feb. 21, and the day's events will feature a baseball doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. There will also be basketball games, live music, fireworks and many more festivities. To register for Homecoming activities, go to
