ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - With a swarming defense and strong three-point shooting, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team secured a 62-51 road win over Sonoma State on Friday night.
The victory puts the Broncos at 13-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), earning the team a spot in the conference tournament to be held March 5 through March 7 in Stockton. CPP owns an overall mark of 17-5.
The Broncos remain in second place in the CCAA standings, trailing Chico State with five regular season games left.
CPP continues to rank at No. 1 nationally for defense and it showed on Friday. The Broncos forced 17 turnovers from the Seawolves and committed only six, the lowest mark for CPP this season.
Jordan Faison and
Terrence Drisdom led the Broncos' offense on Friday, scoring 16 points apiece. Faison added seveon rebounds and three assists.
Barry Bell joined that pair in double figures with 10 points of his own, contributing four assists as well. As a team, CPP went 7-for-16 from beyond the arc with Drisdom, Bell and
Quentin Taylor knocking down two triples each.
Sonoma took a 2-0 lead at the start of the contest but it proved to be the only advantage for the host squad. Faison knocked down a jumper to tie the game and back-to-back threes from Bell and Drisdom built even more momentum.
Midway through the opening half, CPP extended its lead to double digits and it stayed in that range for the rest of the contest. A three-pointer by Taylor at the 1:08 mark left the halftime score at 35-16 in favor of the Broncos.
Sonoma managed to trim the margin back to 10 points on two different occasions in the second half but CPP didn't let it get any closer.
The Broncos will return to action Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. road game at SF State.
