Broncos Open CCAA Play Against San Bernardino

POMONA, Calif. - After last weekend's split with Azusa Pacific, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team will set its sights on California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. On Thursday, the Broncos will travel to Fiscalini Field at Cal State San Bernardino to challenge the Coyotes on the first day of conference play.

Heading into the game, the Green and Gold own a 5-1 record on the season. The season opener proved successful for CPP as they swept the Dixie State Red Storm, winning all four games. This past weekend, the Broncos split a two-game series with Azusa Pacific as the Cougars won on Friday night with a walkoff hit in the 10th, securing a 2-1 win.

On Saturday the Broncos held their 2015 home opener at Scolinos Field and dealt APU its first loss on the season with a 5-3 victory.

This Thursday and Friday, both games will have 6 p.m. starts as the Coyotes host CPP. To conclude the series on Saturday, CPP will host the Coyotes for an 11 a.m. doubleheader. The games will also be part of the Homecoming festivities on campus. As part of the event, there will be a Habit Burger truck at Scolinos Field from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The first 50 CPP students in attendance will receive a Habit Burger voucher that may be redeemed at the truck.

The university will be buzzing with activities, including the baseball games and men's and women's basketball doubleheader against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Women's basketball is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. and the men will follow afterwards with a 7:30 p.m. scheduled start time.

With a solid performance against APU on Saturday, Michael Erb sits at No. 2 on the conference batting average list. He secured two runs batted in with a single down the leftfield line in the first inning, and was the batter on a screamer of a grounder that caused a Cougar error and two more Broncos to score in the fifth.

A newcomer to CPP, Kyle Garlick recorded his third homerun on Saturday and with that, leads the conference in the category. J.J. Franklin, after earning the Bronco record for saves up at Dixie State, shares the CCAA lead with two saves.

Garlick also leads the Broncos with a .680 slugging percentage, nine runs, and seven runs batted in through CPP's six games thus far in 2015. He holds the most at-bats of any Bronco this season with 25 so far.

With just two weekends gone, the Green and Gold have been voted at No. 3 in the West Region according to the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll. UC San Diego holds first place in the poll while Fresno Pacific, a team out of the PacWest Conference, is at No. 2.

Canned Food Drive
This week, the Broncos are collecting canned goods as part of the CCAA drive to help local food banks. Fans are encouraged to donate canned food items at the basketball doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 20 and then the baseball and basketball games on Saturday, Feb. 21.
