Broncos Earn 60-36 Win in Defensive Showing

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team secured a 60-36 road victory on Thursday over Cal State San Bernardino. The 36 points marks the lowest total scored by the Coyotes in their program's history.

CPP improves to a 17-4 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and has earned 21 wins and five losses on the season. With one regular season game remaining, the Broncos will take on Humboldt State on Saturday in Arcata. A win there would secure CPP at least a share of the CCAA regular season title.

Things in San Bernardino took off quickly Thursday for the Broncos as a dunk by Chad Haysbert opened up an onslaught of points that soon found CPP with a 14-0 lead. In that bevy of points, all five of the Green and Gold's starters posted a basket.

Terrence Drisdom went 5-for-9 from the field, including a pair from beyond the arc en route to his 16 points and 11 rebounds in the matchup. Barry Bell also provided five successful shots from the floor to record 11 points. Jordan Faison also added 11 points in the game while Daniel Rodriguez contributed eight points.

The Broncos grabbed 11 more defensive rebounds than the opposition and CPP's nation-leading defense came to play. The home team was held to a mere 19.6-percent mark from the field.

On two different occasions, the Broncos pieced together a double-digit run. Entering halftime, the Broncos carried a 15-point lead over the home team with the scoreboard reading 27-12. With a Bell three at the 15:14 mark in the second half, CPP began its second double-digit run with 11-straight points.

For good measure, the Broncos ended the game going on a shorter, but still impressive seven-point run. The final two baskets in the game were free throws for Hall, both of which he sank. Those free throws brought the final result to 60-36 in favor of the Broncos.

Postseason Picture
The top six CCAA teams will advance to the conference tournament to be held in Stockton from March 5 through March 7 and the Broncos have clinched a spot in that event. The NCAA Division II Tournament bracket will be unveiled on Sunday, March 8, with the top West Region squads earning spots.

Due to their strong showing thus far this season, the Broncos have clinched a first-round bye. CPP's first playoff game will be Friday, March 6 in the semifinal round.
