ARCATA, Calif. – In a hard-fought regular season finale in Arcata, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team suffered a 75-72 loss to Humboldt State.
Having already secured a first-round bye in the conference tournament, the No. 2 seed CPP will start its postseason Friday at 8 p.m. at Stockton Arena.
At 21-6 overall and 17-5 in the CCAA, the Broncos will play the winner of Cal State San Bernardino and Humboldt State. The Coyotes and Jacks will battle at 8 p.m. Thursday in a first-round game.
With fantastic performances in the regular season finale Saturday, the Green and Gold had three players in double-digit points.
Jordan Faison secured 18 points for the Broncos with a 9-for-13 tally from the floor. The junior also recorded a team high eight rebounds.
Terrence Drisdom matched Faison's point tally with 18 of his own. He sank 6-of-12 from the field and had six successful shots from the free throw line.
Ryan Hall was the final Bronco with double-digit points with 12 to his name.
CPP fired 56.9 percent shooting from the field and registered more points off the bench than the Jacks, however the home team held a 2:1 advantage on free throws and a 9:2 advantage from beyond the arc.
HSU held the lead through the vast majority of the game after opening the scoring with a three pointer. A pair of free throws began the Broncos' scoring, and through the first half Humboldt hovered around a 10 point advantage.
At halftime the Broncos were up against an eight-point deficit with the score at 41-33 in HSU's favor.
The second period showed CPP record a bit of a comeback, putting together a pair of nine-point runs in the process. Also in the half for the Broncos was a seven and five point spree.
After a
Chad Haysbert layup at the 6:55 mark, the Broncos moved into the lead for the first time in the contest. They would advance their lead to six points by the end of the run.
Despite the CPP push, the Jacks were not out, they pulled back and pair up back to back runs at five and six points. Their six-point run gave the game its final 75-72 score and HSU the win.
CCAA Tournament ScheduleThe 12-team tournament format (six men's and six women's teams) calls for 10 games to be played over three days in Stockton Arena. Four games (two women's and two men's) scheduled for both Thursday, March 5 and Friday, March 6. Championship games will be played on Saturday, March 7.
