ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Round two of the NCAA Division II Tournament is in the books and the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team has earned a 90-74 win over the Falcons of Seattle Pacific. The 90 points for the Broncos marked a season high, edging their previous high by a single point.
With 16 teams
remaining in the bracket, CPP will now play for its third West Region title in the last five years - the tenure of head coach
Danelle Bishop. The West Region title game will take place Monday night between the Broncos and Cal Baptist. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. Pacific (7 p.m. Alaska). The winner will advanace to the Division II Elite Eight, which will be held March 24 through March 27 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The offensive standout for CPP in Saturday's game was
Mary Williams, whose first half 17 points on an 8-for-9 shooting earned the Green and Gold a four-point, 39-35 advantage heading into the halftime break. Williams recorded a total of 23 points in the matchup, just one point shy of her single-game record.
With nine assists in the first half of the contest,
Jada Blackwell secured her career single game high in the category, she later added another to finish the game with 10. The senior also added 21 points in the contest.
Ashley Lovett secured her second double-double in two days with a 14 point and 12 rebound showing.
With the game clock reading at 9:37 left in the second half, the Falcons took a lead that carried them through much of the remainder of the second half. The Green and Gold would push back hard though and despite a six–point deficit, come back to once again lead the game with just minutes to play. A few advantageous fouls for CPP and the Broncos secured the game by 16.
Playing out of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), the SPU Falcons earned their way into the contest with a first round victory over the Humboldt State Lumberjacks on Friday. CPP's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills advanaced them ito Saturday's matchup.
