CARSON, Calif. – It was a hitter's day at Toro Park as the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos defeated the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills 13-6 on Friday. The Broncos' 13 runs came off of nine hits, and all 13 of them came in the first three innings.
The Broncos improve to an overall 21-7 tally on the season, with a 13-5 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUDH now carries an even 15-15 win-loss record and a 10-12 standing in conference play.
CPP's productive first inning, in which three runs were scored, saw eight runners wearing Green and Gold come to the plate. Four of them earned hits, and the three runs were scored on a two runs batted in single by
Nick Cooksey and a sacrifice fly for
Caleb Romo, one of three that he recorded on the day.
As is often the case in baseball, a hitters day easily applies to both sides as the Toros pulled even with the Broncos in the bottom half of the inning as their homerun leader sent a three-run shot over the right center fence.
The Broncos tallied four more runs in the second inning as
Nicholas Bruno was first to score after drawing a walk, moving over on a hit batter, advancing to third on a fielder's choice hit by
Christian Kelley, then home after the Toros' pitcher aimed poorly and threw it past the third baseman.
Cooksey came up and sent another run-scoring single through the infield. A fielder's choice by
Michael Zidek opened the gates for the second run of the inning to score as an overthrow by the catcher scored
Kyle Garlick. The to end the scoring in the inning Romo sends his second sac fly to the outfield, scoring Cooksey in the process.
The home team, not to be outdone, posted another couple of runs in the bottom half of the inning. The score at the end of two sat 7-5 in favor of the Broncos.
CPP then recorded its highest-scoring inning of the game, adding six runs to the board in the top of the third. With the bases loaded Garlick came to the plate and a misplaced ball thrown by the Toros plunked him and brought the Broncos' eighth run home. The next two plays saw Cooksey walk and bring a run home and Zidek single again, providing another run for the visitors.
The final pair of runs for the Green and Gold came at the hands of Romo and Matt Munoz as the Broncos' designated hitter (Romo) recorded his third sacrifice fly in the game. Munoz singled to right field and scored Zidek soon after Romo's sacrifice.
The final run for the Toros came in the late half of the third inning as a single to right with two on proved advantageous. The run gave the game its final 13-6 result.
Kelley, Cooksey, and Zidek all posted multiple hits on the day, while Garlick's single expanded his hit streak to 10 games. Just behind Garlick, Kelley has a nine game hit streak underway and Cooksey has added a hit in each of his last seven games.
The Broncos return to play on Saturday at Scolinos Field as they host the Toros for the final two games in the series with a doubleheader. Game one of the day, three of the series, is set to begin at 11 a.m.
