Broncos Split Saturday's Twinbill with Toros

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team, ranked 18th nationally, earned a doubleheader split against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at Scolinos Field.
The Broncos suffered a tough 7-6 loss in game one before cruising to a 12-3 win in the second contest.

With the results, CPP ended up taking three of four from the Toros to capture another series victory. At 22-8 overall and 14-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Broncos haven't lost a series yet in the 2015 campaign.

Kyle Garlick improved his hit streak to a CPP leading 11-straight games. Christian Kelley boosted his average to a league leading .425 and extended his hit-streak to 10 consecutive games. Nick Cooksey improved to eight-straight games with a hit for the Green and Gold.

Next week will feature a pivotal series as second-place CPP battles against first-place UC San Diego.

Game 1: Toros 7, Broncos 6

The Broncos held a 6-3 lead into the later innings but a four-run rally from Dominguez in the seventh inning helped the visiting squad pull off the narrow victory.

Kyle Garlick gave CPP an early boost on offense, launching a two-run homer before CSUDH could even record an out in the first inning. Garlick added an RBI hit in the fourth, with that rally extended with a Michael Zidek sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Matt Muñoz. With the homer Garlick once again took over the home run category, taking sole possession of first with his 10.

CPP starter Ryan Olson finished with five innings, allowing four hits while striking out six. He left the game with the Broncos leading 6-3 but the CPP bullpen couldn't close out the home victory.

The Toros opened the top of the seventh with three-consecutive singles and then received some help from a Broncos' error that helped two runs score as the score pulled even at 6-6. The eventual winning run came off the bat of Johnny Palmer as he drove a 3-1 pitch into the outfield and scored teammate Juan Avena.

GAME 2: Broncos 12, Toros 3

Cody Ponce made his fourth start on the mound for the Broncos and earned the win in the series finale as the Green and Gold outscored the opposition 12-3. The junior threw just 53 pitches in four complete innings. He racked up five strikeouts and allowed just one walk and three hits. Two runs scored with the 6-foot-5 righty on the mound, but neither was earned.

The Broncos were first to score as a sacrifice bunt from Jacob Bernardy allowed Muñoz to provide the first run for CPP. CSUDH, so as not to be outdone, answered back in the next half inning adding two runs to the board after a throwing error caused an advantageous opportunity to present itself.

In the bottom half of the third, Garlick led off with a single to the shortstop, which was quickly followed by a double by Cooksey, allowing Garlick to tally up CPP's tying run.

With Muñoz taking his base after getting hit by a pitch, Ryan Webberley sent the long ball over the left field fence, adding three RBIs to his resume for the game and putting the Broncos up 5-2.

A pair of solid at-bats from Nicholas Bruno and Jacob Bernardy provided the ammunition the Broncos needed to allow a Kelley single to add CPP's sixth run.

In the fifth inning the visitors added a sacrifice fly that allowed their third and final run to cross the plate.

Kelley would again boost the CPP offense as another single allowed Webberley to score, making the game score 7-4 in favor of the Broncos.

The sixth inning allowed the home squad to add five more runs off of a Bruno single to left, Kelley getting hit by a pitch, a fortuitous balk by the CSUDH pitching staff, and a double by Kyle Garlick.
