5-2 Score in La Jolla Boosts CPP over Tritons

LA JOLLA, Calif. - With a 5-2 victory Friday night in La Jolla, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team has evened the series with UC San Diego 1-1. The two teams will conclude their series Saturday in Pomona with a 12 p.m. start to a doubleheader.

J.J. Franklin, the nation's Division II save leader, earned save No. 10 to improve upon his school record and remain at the helm of D-II pitchers. Ryan Olson secured his fifth win for CPP, now standing at 5-0 on the season.

With the win, the Broncos improve to a 23-9 record on the season, complete with a 15-7 tally in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Tritons, after winning on Thursday and falling Friday, now hold a 23-10 overall mark, with a 19-6 showing in conference play.

Making his ninth appearance of the year, Olson provided six complete innings for CPP while allowing just five hits and two earned runs. The only runs that the Tritons earned came from a double in the bottom of the fourth. Olson struck out six members of the home team in the game and came out with the Broncos up 3-2.

CPP earned their first pair of runs with a Nicholas Bruno double. The third baseman answered back almost immediately after the Tritons took the lead to score Matt Munoz and Ryan Webberley.

Later in that same inning, after Bruno advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Bernardy, Christian Kelley sent a ground ball to the shortstop that allowed Bruno to score. CPP led the Tritons 3-2 after the fifth.

Despite a Bronco lead, the visitors were not done, in the 8th Munoz would again play a key role as his double down the left field line provided CPP with a pair of security runs and gave the game its final 5-2 result.

After Olson retired from the mound, Zach Williams came in and dealt two complete innings, striking out four Tritons and giving up no hits.

Franklin came in to close out the game in the ninth, and allowed just a single hit but also recorded a strikeout, earning him save No. 10, and keeping him in his place as the nation's leader for saves.

The Broncos and Tritons will head to Pomona for a doubleheader to close out the series on Saturday, playing the first game at 12 p.m. at Scolinos Field

The first 30 CPP students who show their Bronco ID will receive free In-N-Out vouchers.
