@CPPVB Falls to No. 21 Sonoma State 3-0

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team were defeated on Saturday night by No. 21 Sonoma State three sets to none.It was a well matched night as the sets were lost 18-25, 26-28, and 25-27 respectively.

CPP now holds a 6-5 overall tally with a 2-1 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Seawolves improved to a 5-3 mark on the season, complete with an even 1-1 in the CCAA.

Deanna Blaine was the offensive standout on the Green and Gold posting 16 of the Broncos' 46 kills. The sophomore recorded a .308 kill percentage and committed just four errors in the match. She also posted eight digs and one block. On the defensive side of things, Zoe Herrera registered a team-high 19 digs.

In the first set, the Seawolves jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. CPP pushed back though and soon sat just one point back of SSU with the score at 6-5. The visitors weren't willing to relinquish their lead however and held the lead through the whole set. A few points strung back-to-back provided them the points they needed to take the first set 25-18.

Set number two showed the Broncos with a second wind as the Green and Gold held the lead at a few different places. A pair of Nicoletta Stork kills motivated the home team to go on a 5-2 run to kick things off. SSU rallied for a few points of their own from there though and soon the score was tied up at 7-7.

After the 7-7 tie, the scoreboard would read a tie at 11 other points. Unfortunately for the Green and Gold, the final lead change would go in favor of the Seawolves as a pair of kills gave them the final two points to push ahead and win the set 28-26.

What would be the third and final set again ended in extra points as the SSU team took it 27-25. The Broncos led nearly the entire set, but unfortunately their steam ran out right at the end and the Sonoma squad was able to forage ahead and get their final two points for the win. The beginning of the set saw the Broncos with a 7-2 lead.

The Seawolves went on a roll as they trailed CPP 23-19. They created a five-point spree put them ahead 24-23. CPP tied it up, SSU went ahead, CPP tied it up, then the visitors closed out the match with back-to-back kills.

CPP's next match will take place on Wednesday Sept. 23 as they travel to Cal State L.A. to take on the Golden Eagles.
