@cppmsoccer and #14 Toros Tie 2-2 on Friday

POMONA, Calif.- On Friday night, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos and the No. 14 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros went toe-to-toe for 110 minutes, resulting in a 2-2 tie.

The tie pushes the CPP squad's record to 3-1-3 thus far on the 2015 season, complete with a 0-1-2 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The nationally-ranked Toros now sit with a 6-1-1 mark on the season and a 2-0-1 record in conference play.

Spurred by a red card just 23 seconds into the game, the Cal Poly Pomona offense, playing a man down, put the first point on the board. A free kick was awarded to the Green and Gold, and Eshel Chardon took advantage of it. The Israeli native sent the back into the right corner of the net, giving the Broncos the lead just 3:20 into the game.

Nearly 10 and a half minutes later, the visiting Toros posted their first score of the contest as a high pass enabled Mike Dias to send a header past a diving CPP keeper. The score was Diaz' seventh of the season, as he leads the Carson crowd in the category.

To pull ahead in the match, Gilberto Rocha of CSUDH recorded the Toros' second and final goal of the game. His score came as a mass in front of the CPP net deflected a long shot and then allowed Rocha to send it past the outstretched hands of the CPP keeper.

At the halftime break, the score stood 2-1 in favor of the Carson-based CSUDH Toros.

In the second half, in order to push himself into the team lead in the category, Christian Gonzalez Diaz scored his fourth goal of the season. At the 51:24 mark, the senior received a pass from Aaron Macedo in the right corner of the field. CGD then jumped and headed the ball in from four yards out over the keeper's head. The goal tied the game up and would be the final score in the contest. The assist for Macedo marked his first of the season.

Both overtimes came and went at Kellogg Field, and despite a number of strong offensive opportunities, the two squad's defenses held out and didn't allow the ball to touch the inside of the net.

In the first half, the Toros outshot the Broncos 10-2, but CPP turned it around the second half and bettered the Carson squad 10-3. Four shots went to the Toros in overtime, and the Broncos were able to collect just one. Jason Trejos in the net for CPP recorded four saves in the match.

The Broncos will return to action for a 2 p.m. game on Sunday at Kellogg Field. The game marks Special Olympics Recognition day as the Cal Poly Pomona Athletic Department takes the fay to recognize those athletes, participants, and volunteers who helped to make the recent LA Games a huge success.
