Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Toros Top Broncos by Three in 76-73 Upset

CARSON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team completed its roughest weekend of the season thus far with a 76-73 loss to the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros. The loss was the Broncos' second consecutive and third of the season.

CPP now holds an oveall mark of 14-3 with a 7-3 record in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The win for the Toros was their ninth of the season and third in conference play as they hold a 3-6 record.

Jordan Faison led the CPP offense in the contest as he posted a team-high 19 points on a 7-for-8 performance from the field. Quentin Taylor was second on the squad with 13 points of his own, and rounding out CPP's double-digit scorers was Francois Tchoyi at 11.

The game was a true testament to how difficult the CCAA is as a conference. CPP as a team was successful on 53.2% of shots from the field. The hometown Toros were 57.5% successful and found their mark on three more three pointers than the Green and Gold.

CPP did hold the lead through much of the game, but the Toros found their groove and ran with it. Despite the Broncos holding the lead up till just under six minutes to play in the game, CSUDH pushed back and took the lead.

The contest did see six total ties, and seven lead changes. In the second half with 11 minutes to play, the Broncos held their largest lead, carrying an eight-point advantage.

The Broncos' bench was much stronger on the court than the Toros', scoring 25 points to the CSUDH six.

After a Toro three pointer broke the CPP eight-point lead at the 10:34 mark, neither team was ever more than a couple shots in the lead. At 5:54, Dominguez Hills tied the game at 64-64. A free throw gave them their first lead since the first half.

From the Toro lead at 65-64, the Broncos tied it up at 66-66, then Dominguez Hills scored a layup and free throw and each Bronco point was answered with a Toro basket and the CPP squad never regained the lead.

CPP will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 23, as they host the Humboldt State Jacks at Kellogg Arena for a 7:30 p.m. start. The Jacks topped the Cal State LA Golden Eagles by 10 on Saturday and carry with them an identical 7-3 conference mark into the matchup. Overall the HSU squad has secured just one fewer win than the Broncos.
