Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Faison Nearly Perfect in CPP 86-76 Victory!

POMONA, Calif. – A huge crowd was in for a treat at Kellogg Arena as the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team secured an 86-76 victory over the Humboldt State Jacks on Saturday night.

An 8-for-9 showing from the field and six good shots from the free throw line made Jordan Faison the game's leading scorer with 22 points. The senior was one of seven players in the contest to reach the double-digit point mark. He was named the La Quinta Player of the Game as his point tally was paired with a game-leading nine rebounds, team-leading seven assists, game-leading two blocks, and one steal.

Joining Faison in the double-digit point club were Daylan Lawrence, Barry Bell, and Jeremy Dennis. Lawrence added 16 points to finish second on squad. Bell added 14 while also tying Faison at the team-leading seven assists mark. Rounding out the Broncos' scorers with at least 10 points was Dennis, who sank 13 and was second on the team with seven rebounds.

The win marks the Green and Gold's 15th of the year as they now hold an overall tally of 15-3, complete with an 8-3 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. CPP's stellar season mark includes a flawless 8-0 showing at Kellogg Arena.

Humboldt's loss drops them out of the tie that they had with the Broncos heading into the matchup as they now hold a conference record of 7-4 en route to a season mark of 13-4.

The game was certainly a good one by any measure. CPP's offense sank 53.7% of their shots from the field while the Jacks were right on their tail at 50%. The visitors did sink two more long balls than the Broncos, but the Green and Gold's eight is no shabby number.

CPP was able to grab eight more rebounds than the NorCal opponents, outnumbering them 35-27 in that department. The game saw three ties on the scoreboard and each squad manages to gain the lead four times.

Even though CPP held the lead for nearly 2/3 of the contest, the Humboldt squad did last hold the lead with a 58-57 score. Each team reached the 20s in their assist tally. The Broncos earned an advantage in their three point shooting though as they sank 20 as opposed to the Jacks' 11.

Head Coach Greg Kamansky's nationally-leading defense did nab eight steals from the HSU team while CPP's offense allowed just two from them. Both teams put together some impressive runs. In the first half, the Jacks had a pair of eight-point sprees, the second of which ended with a 31-24 lead over the Broncos.

In the second half, HSU locked down 11-straight for their largest run of the game. CPP reached its second-highest run of the game at the end of the first half and spilling into the second. A pair of Francois Tchoyi free throws led off what would become an 11-point run of their own.

With the score three points in HSU's favor, the Broncos largest run of the game was also the final changing of the lead. CPP knocked down 13-consecutive points and finished the run with an eight-point advantage.

The remainder of the game was fairly even scoring with the Broncos adding just two more points to their lead. The game's final score was 86-76 in favor of the Green and Gold.

The Broncos will return to action on Thursday as they host local rivals, the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes for Pack the Stands Night at Kellogg Arena. The evening will be ripe with events and halftime entertainment. The women's contest will begin at 5:30 with the men following roughly 20 minutes after their conclusion.
