POMONA, Calif. – With an 84-63 shutdown of the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes Thursday night, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team remains flawless at home. Thus far in the 2015-16 season, they are 9-0 at Kellogg Arena.
The large Pack the Stands crowd witnessed some stellar playing from the CPP squad as they were led by senior
Jordan Faison. The Lake Forest native racked up an amazing 27 points on a 10-for-14 showing complete with a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. The forward earned another double-double as he also grabbed 10 rebounds. All three of the Green and Gold's blocks can be credited to Faison as well as two of their five steals.
Barry Bell was the most helpful Bronco on the court as he dished out nine assists to his teammates, accounting for half of CPP's assist total.
The Broncos' record improves to a 16-3 mark on the season complete with a 9-3 showing against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponents. Losing the contest dropped the Coyotes to 4-9 in the CCAA and 7-10 overall this season.
Two other members of the Bronco team recorded double-digit points as
Daylan Lawrence sank three shots from beyond the arc, two shots inside the arc, and five free throws to reach his 18-point tally.
Jeremy Dennis registered at 15 points on his 6-for-11 showing.
In the first half, the CPP nationally-ranked defense limited the opposition to merely three successful shots and a 13% shooting from the field. The halftime score was 32-18 in the Broncos' favor however as CSUSB did sink 11 free throws.
The Coyotes were able to bounce back in the second half, but the damage was done and CPP won the contest with a 21 point lead.
To open off the game scoring, Bell sank a layup to put CPP on the board. The visitors to Kellogg Arena answered back with a layup of their own, then Dennis gave the Broncos their final lead of the game with just 2:55 gone from the game clock.
In the middle of the first half, the Broncos went on their second-largest run of the game, sinking eight-straight points. The run gave them a 10-point advantage with the score at 16-6. From that point, the CPP lead would never dip below six points.
Leading the Broncos into the 32-18 halftime score, CPP was on a five-point spree. They carried the momentum into the second half as they added six more points to lock down their largest spree of the game at 11.
The remainder of the game saw relatively even scoring. With less than a minute to play, the Broncos would reach their largest lead of the game on a Dennis three that put CPP up by 23. A pair of free throws for the Coyotes closed out scoring as CPP won the contest with an 84-63 score.
CPP will return to action on Saturday as they host UC San Diego Tritons at Kellogg Arena. The Broncos will be looking to avenge the loss dealt by the Tritons on Jan. 2, CPP's first of the season. The UCSD team currently sits at first-place in the CCAA as they have secured a conference tally of 11-2, en route to an overall mark of 16-3.
UCSD will head to Kellogg with a three-game win streak on the line as they topped the Humboldt State Jacks 73-69 on Thursday. The contest between the Broncos and Tritons is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
