Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Broncos Grab Victory from the Coyotes 52-45!

POMONA, Calif. – The Pack the Stands crowd at Kellogg Arena was in for a treat as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball secured the 52-45 win over the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes on Saturday night. The Broncos kicked off the game with a 10-point spree.

Drawing the win, the Broncos improve to an overall tally of 7-12 on the season, complete with a 5-7 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The loss for the Coyotes dropped them to a conference standing of 7-6 en route to their season record of 10-7.

CPP had a pair of players achieve a double-double in the contest as they were led by senior Mary Williams. The Rialto native put down 19 points in the game on a 6-for-10 showing complete with seven successful attempts from the free throw line. Defensively, Williams pulled down 13 rebounds and added a block to her resume for the game.

Nabbing the Broncos' other double-double was Priscilla Brooks. With a 4-for-9 performance and a pair of free throws, she put down 10 points. She also added 10 rebounds of her own in the showdown. As a team the Green and Gold had five blocks, and Brooks provided her teammates with five of them. The product of Riverside added a pair of steals to the contest as well.

Behind Brooks and nearing the double-double mark herself was Alyssa Benton, the sophomore added eight points of her own and seven rebounds. Together, Williams, Brooks, and Benton tallied 83% of the Broncos' rebounds.

After the Broncos opened the game with the 10-point streak, the visiting Coyotes answered back with five points of their own. CPP quickly bounced back and packed on six more points. The contest featured a lot of multi-runs.

At the conclusion of the first quarter, the Green and Gold held an 11-point, 16-5 lead. The Coyotes did bounce back and featured a stronger second quarter in which they tied up the contest and even jumped a point up, but a free throw from Jordyn Shane tied up the game at 23-23 heading into the halftime break.

Halftime of Pack the Stands featured the Zooperstars, a traveling mascot troupe that provides entertainment and fun for all ages.

Williams jumpstarted the Broncos' second half with a jumper that gave the hometeam a 25-23 lead. The remainder of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter was back-and-forth as neither team was able to glimpse more than a three-point lead.

Just under eight minutes to go in the fourth and final quarter is where the CPP offense struck. Four-straight free throws credited to Marshanique Hall and Jackie Ricketson jolted the Broncos to go on another 10-point run that ended with them carrying an eight-point lead.

The remainder of the game stayed in the Green and Gold's favor and a five-point run to end it gave CPP the 52-45 victory.

CPP will return to action on Saturday as they host the UC San Diego Tritons. The UCSD squad will be arriving to Kellogg Arena for the 5:30 p.m. start after topping the Humboldt State Jacks 76-51 at the HSU home court on Thursday. They carry a conference tally of 11-2 and a 16-3 overall record into the showdown at Kellogg.
