CPP Takes 1st Set but Falls to Tritons, 3-1

LA JOLLA, Calif. – After taking the first set 25-23, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team ended up suffering a 3-1 road loss at UC San Diego on Saturday night.
 
As a team, the Broncos outhit the Tritons in attack percentage .195 to .192. Alexandra Gresham and Deanna Blaine put together impressive performances on offense, collecting kill totals of 19 and 17 respectively.
 
Setters Alina Smith and Kalea Vizmanos totaled 52 of CPP's 54 assists on Saturday, helping to provide opportunities for Gresham, Blaine and the other Bronco hitters.
 
The Tritons outdid CPP in the blocking category as the host squad collected 14 block assists as compared to the Broncos' eight. For CPP, Blaine and Karah Griffiths recorded three block assists apiece. Amanda Jaramillo led the Broncos' defense as she tallied 25 digs with Samantha Figuerora adding 19.
 
With Saturday's result, the Broncos are now 4-13 overall and 0-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). UCSD improved to 10-8 overall and 7-3 in league action.
 
The two teams traded the lead throughout the opening frame before falling into a 23-23 tie. The Broncos scored the final two points of the set, including a combined block by Desi Martin and Blaine.

The Tritons held a one-point edge late in the second set and CPP couldn't overcome the slight deficit. UCSD received a kill from Jessyca Beksa to finish the 25-23 result.
 
The two squads kept close once again in the third frame and Andrea Bosnic delivered a kill to tie the score at 22-22. The Tritons scored the final three points of the set though, earning the 25-22 result.
 
UCSD built momentum in the fourth set, putting together a 24-16 gap. CPP didn't back down, earning a 4-0 run that featured a pivotal kill by Blaine. The Tritons finished the match with a Rebecca Seaberry kill, taking the 25-20 score in the set and the 3-1 win.
 
The Broncos will finish their string of three-consecutive road matches with a Tuesday contest at Cal State San Bernardino. CPP's next home match will take place on Friday against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
