POMONA, Calif. - Despite going into the break with a 1-1 score, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team was dealt a 3-1 defeat on Friday night at Kellogg Arena.
Sophomore
Andrea Bosnic put together another stellar performance for the Broncos as she tallied 19 kills. She has averaged 18.3 kills through the last three matches.
Bosnic was one of three Broncos with double-digit dig totals as well, joining
Deanna Blaine and
Samantha Figueroa in that group.
Alina Smith collected 37 kills while helping the CPP attack battle the Tritons.
With the result, the Broncos fall to 5-16 overall and 1-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). UCSD improved to 12-8 overall and 9-4 through league play.
CPP jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening frame with that run capped off with a
Desi Martin kill. The two teams traded the lead for the majority of the set until the Tritons broke a 20-20 tie with a 5-1 run to close it out.
The Broncos put together several impressive runs in the second set, including a 5-0 spurt that extended the home team's lead to 19-13. That span of points featured a pair of kills from Bosnic along with key plays by
Kristen Hamlin and Martin. The 25-21 result in favor of CPP ended with a Bosnic kill off a Smith assist.
Despite a late string of points from the Broncos to trim the advantage to 22-18, UCSD took the third frame 25-18. The Tritons secured the 3-1 victory with a 25-20 score in the fourth set.Â
CPP will return to action on Saturday with a 7 p.m. home match against Cal State San Marcos.
