POMONA, Calif. – Despite a late goal from
Amanda Duran, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Cal State East Bay on Sunday.
The result drops the Broncos to 5-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Pioneers improve to 3-6-3 overall and 2-4-0 through league play.
East Bay jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with a pair of scores in the first 10 minutes of action. After a yellow card issued to CPP's
Emily Sanchez in the box, the Pioneers' Megan Ravenscroft capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity at the 4:08 mark.
Roughly six minutes later, CSUEB pushed its lead to 2-0. Savannah Schultz knocked a free kick into the left side of the net from about 30 yards out.
Toward the end of the opening period,
Natalie Di Angelo sent a long free kick off the left post but the ball rolled out of bounds and the score remained intact.
Although the Broncos outshot the Pioneers 11-3 in the first half, the host squad trailed 2-0 heading into intermission.
CPP got on the board in the 86th minute, when sophomore
Sydney Yates initiated the scoring opportunity. She sent a pass up the right side to Duran, who dribbled into the box and lined a 10-yard shot into the left side of the net.
After a week away from competition, the Broncos will return to action on Friday, Oct. 21 with a road game at Cal State L.A.
