POMONA, Calif. - After being picked to finish third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team will start its 2016-17 campaign with a pair of non-conference games this week.
As part of a two-day CCAA/PacWest Challenge to be held in San Diego, CPP will take on host Point Loma Friday at 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, the Broncos go up against Azusa Pacific at 4 p.m. Both games will be held on the Point Loma campus.
Last year, the Broncos went 11-17 and reached the CCAA Tournament. After losing just one senior, CPP is poised for a memorable season in 2016-17. The Broncos will be traveling during the first three weeks of the regular season but CPP will finally get a chance to see the team on Nov. 29 when the Broncos host UC San Diego to start conference play.
This Friday's opponent - Point Loma - was picked to finish fifth in the PacWest preseason coaches' poll. The Broncos and Sea Lions battled early last season and Point Loma walked away with a 72-54 victory in Pomona.
CPP's Saturday opponent this week - Azusa Pacific - won the PacWest regular season and tournament titles last season. Heading into 2016-17, the Cougars are ranked No. 2 in their conference. The Broncos will be looking to avenge the 2015-16 season opener when APU topped CPP in Kellogg Arena.
The Broncos' returners now have plenty of experience. The 2016-17 roster features two seniors -
Marshanique Hall and
Erin Hagan - along with five juniors.
