RIVERSIDE, Calif. - In a highly-anticipated road game at nationally-ranked Cal Baptist on Saturday night, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team fell by a narrow 71-66 score after cutting the gap to one point with three minutes left.
Three Broncos scored in double figures with
Jeremy Dennis leading the way as he totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double performance.
William Christmas added 11 points on 5-for-11 shooting while
Nikhil Peters delivered 10 points in just 19 minutes of action.
CPP falls to a record of 1-2 while the Lancers improve to 3-0. CBU entered the matchup with a No. 9 ranking in the latest NCAA Division II poll.
The two squads ended up nearly even in most of the statistical categories. The Lancers outshot the Broncos 43.4 to 37.9 but the CPP defense collected eight steals as compared to CBU's four. Ogundiran led the Broncos with three steals individually.
CPP and CBU traded the lead back and forth in the first half. The two squads combined to just go 6-for-28 from three-point range through the first 20 minutes but a
Daylan Lawrence triple in the final seconds helped the Broncos trim the Lancers' lead to 29-28 heading into halftime.
The Broncos started the second half on a 5-0 run that featured a
Chris Sullivan jumper and a three from Dennis. CBU captured the lead once again one minute later and held it for the remainder of the contest.
Christmas knocked down a three to make it a 59-58 score with 4:57 to play. Then after the margin widened a bit, Lawrence sank a layup to make it a one-point gap at the 3:06 mark. CPP couldn't even the score or pull in front though and the Lancers finished with the 71-66 victory.
The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday as they host Antelope Valley on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
