@CPPWBB Battles Tough but Falls 56-47 at SFU

BURNABY, B.C. - In its final non-conference matchup, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffered a 56-47 loss at Simon Fraser on Saturday afternoon.

With a three-pointer by Alyssa Benton early in the fourth quarter, the Broncos pulled to within just two points of SFU. CPP couldn't get any closer though down the stretch as Simon Fraser outscored the Broncos 20-16 in that final frame.

Junior Chelsea Waddy-Blow collected her first double-double performance for CPP with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Broncos in both categories on Saturday. The Rialto native went 6-for-6 at the free throw line.

Alyssa Benton joined her in double figures with 11 points while adding two blocks. Erin Hagan also helped CPP's defense as she tallied a team-high four steals. The Broncos outrebounded SFU 40-29 as Hagan and Priscilla Brooks added seven boards apiece.

A Benton free throw midway through the first quarter evened the score at 7-7 but the home squad built up a 13-7 edge heading into the second frame. One minute into the second quarter, CPP's Casey McWilliam snapped the SFU run with a successful jumper.

After the Simon Fraser lead widened to 11 points, the Broncos rallied with back-to-back three-pointers from Marshanique Hall and Benton. CPP managed to cut the gap to a one-possession margin on multiple occasions in the third and fourth quarters but couldn't overtake SFU for the lead.

The Broncos will look past this week's results and aim to make a quick turnaround on Tuesday when they host UC San Diego for the start of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Kellogg Arena.
