POMONA, Calif. – In a terrific start to conference play, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team defeated UC San Diego 65-56 on Tuesday night at Kellogg Arena.
It marked the first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game for both teams and the home opener for CPP. The Broncos improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Tritons, who entered the matchup receiving votes just outside the top 25 nationally, fall to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA.
CPP put together an impressive shooting performance on Tuesday, sinking 52.4 percent of their field goal attempts and going 7-for-10 from three-point range. Through the 40 minutes of action, the Broncos led for the final 37.
Junior forwards
Chelsea Waddy-Blow and
Alyssa Benton led the way offensively with 14 points apiece. Waddy-Blow went 6-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-2 at the line while Benton sank four three-pointers and a pair of free throws.
Jackie Ricketson collected a career-high 10 assists, falling just three shy of CPP's single-game record.
Priscilla Brooks nearly earned a double-double performance, totaling 10 rebounds and nine points.
The Tritons managed to take a 4-2 lead early in the contest but the Broncos stole the momentum quickly. The first Benton triple started an 8-0 run for CPP that gave the home team a six-point margin.
A three-pointer from
Jordyn Shane was featured in a 7-0 second-quarter spurt that pushed the gap to double-digits, where it stayed at halftime – 28-18.
CPP's largest lead of the contest came late in the fourth quarter, when another Benton three-pointer pushed the score to 57-42. UCSD rallied for a few points late but the Broncos wrapped up the nine-point victory.
CPP will return to action Friday with a 5:30 p.m. road game at San Francisco State.
