Broncos Topped 6-2 by UCSD Tritons

LA JOLLA, Calif. – In the two baseball teams' first meeting since the NCAA West Region Title game last season, the No. 26 UC San Diego Tritons topped the No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos 6-2. The West Region Title game in 2015 saw the Broncos secure the win and the trip to Cary, NC for the Division II National Championships.

The loss for Broncos was their second of the season. After sweeping the three games that happened this weekend prior to the showdown with UCSD, the Broncos now how a 6-2 record on the season. The Tritons' win improves them to a 7-1 mark thus far.

Starting on the mound for the Broncos was Ryan Alsworth, the sophomore had an impressive showing as he threw for 4.2 innings and allowed just two hits and one earned run to score. His performance included seven strikeouts and a single walk allowed.

The hometown Tritons scored first in the game with a run in the second inning. A single to center allowed the inning's leadoff batter to score from third base.

Looking ahead to the sixth inning, the Broncos would secure their first run of the game as Jared James sent out his second long ball of the season. The lefty used his power to send the ball over the right field fence and pull the Broncos even with the home team.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, UCSD would answer back after a throwing error by Chris Stratton enabled a pair of Triton runners to advance bases and score. The inning wasn't over however as the home town squad then knocked a single through the left side and scored their third run of the inning.

In the eighth inning, the Broncos scored their second and final run of the game. Michael Erb led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on an advancing groundball from Stratton. A shot at the shortstop from Ryan Webberley then allowed Erb to score and the Broncos' second run was on the board.

In the bottom half of the eighth inning, UCSD padded its lead as a couple walks combined with a single and a wild pitch gave them their final score of six runs.

Drawing the loss for the Broncos was Matthew Grier, his appearance in relief for Alsworth unfortunately saw the Tritons secure the lead as he had a few runs score, only one of which was earned. Also taking the bump for the Green and Gold in the game were Kohto Hasegawa, Erik Trask, and Zach Williams.

CPP's offense did have seven hits in the contest as Stratton, James, Michael Zidek, Nicholas Bruno, Alex Gaskin, Frankie Nogales, and Erb all reached base. Webberley and James recorded the two RBIs.

The Broncos will return to action as they head to Carson on Tuesday to challenge the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros at Toro Field. The matchup is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. and will feature CPP and the 3-4 Toros.
