CPP Now 6-3 After Falling to Toros in Carson

CARSON, Calif. – The No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered a 10-2 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday. The contest was held at Toro Field in Carson, CSUDH's home field.

The matchup was a rematch of sorts as the last time the two squads met was in the 2015 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament where the Broncos secured the victory 4-0 to knock the Toros out of contention for the West Region Tournament.

On the season, CPP now holds a 6-3 record and though they played a conference rival, the game was a non-conference matchup. The win for the Toros now sees them with an even 4-4 mark on the season. The Green and Gold will get six days to prepare for the next game, which will be held at Scolinos Field as they host the Vanguard Lions at 6 p.m. on Feb. 22.

Newcomer Tyler Rowe started on the mound for the Broncos and pitched for 3.2 innings. His performance includes four hits and two earned runs allowed coupled with a pair of strikeouts. Rowe was replaced by Peter Beattie, who suffered the loss in the contest as a pair of earned runs allowed gave the Toros their final lead.

In the first inning, the Broncos were first to bat and despite Nicholas Bruno doubling with just one out, no run was scored.

A fielder's choice in the bottom half of the inning secured the Toros their first run of the contest as a pair of baserunners with just one out had reached base safely. The top of the second came with Michael Zidek smacking a leadoff single to right center and moving to second and then third on a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Webberley and a single from Frankie Nogales. No luck would come for the Broncos though as they remained scoreless in the inning.

In the bottom of the third inning another run would get on the board as the Toros' third baseman hit the team's first homerun of the season, putting his team up 2-0.

CPP wouldn't answer until the fifth inning in the contest as Nogales doubled to right field to lead it off. He advanced to third on a grounder from Cody Martin and then scored on a sacrifice bunt from Chris Stratton. The Broncos' second and final run of the game would be scored as an error from the Toro shortstop allowed Alex Gaskin to score after reaching base via hit-by-pitch.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, the home team would answer back in the following half inning with a single and a throwing error that enabled their third run to score. The sixth inning came with three more runs for the CSUDH team after a couple of knocks brought their runners home.

In the seventh, a single to center scored another run for the home team, then in the eighth, the game's final score would be reached with a sacrifice fly to right that scored a runner from third making the scoreboard read 10-2.
