TURLOCK, Calif. – Despite tying the game late in regulation to send it into overtime, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team suffered an 80-68 road loss to Stanislaus State.
Â
The result drops the Broncos to 20-6 overall and 13-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Warriors improve to 7-16 overall and 6-12 in league action.
Â
With one regular season game remaining at Homecoming on Feb. 27, CPP has already clinched a first-round game in the CCAA Tournament on March 1.
Â
Three Broncos finished with double-digit point totals, including
Jordan Ogundiran and
Quentin Taylor with 15 apiece along with
Daylan Lawrence adding 11 of his own. It marked the fourth-consecutive game that Ogundiran has scored in double figures.
Â
Senior
Jordan Faison finished with a season-high four blocks to go along with nine points, eight rebounds and two assists.
The first half began as Lawrence opened off the scoring with a three pointer. The home team answered back with a layup, then the Broncos posted four-straight points on a pair of Ogunidran free throws and a Taylor jumper.
Â
Stanislaus answered back with seven points of their own, a figure they would repeat moments later after a couple of baskets from the Broncos. Â From there, with an eight-point lead for the Warriors, the two squads began trading points until just before the conclusion of the first half. Just before the break,
Jeremy Dennis and Taylor each posted a layup to bring the Green and Gold just four back. At the break, the score in Fitzpatrick Arena stood at Warriors 34, Broncos 30.
Â
In the second half, the Bronco offense pushed back and took the lead. To open the half, the Warriors sank a three, but then eight-consecutive points from the Green and Gold, including six-straight from Ogundiran gave the Broncos their first lead since the opening minutes of the contest.
Â
The Warriors recorded five straight to reclaim the lead, but then CPP, trailing two points, took off. Lawrence sank another three,
Jordan Faison tallied a layup, Dennis was successful in his attempt from beyond the arc, Faison added another layup, and
Scott Hastings gave the Broncos a seven-point advantage with a layup of his own.
Â
In a testament to the CCAA, the Warriors didn't quit there. They proceeded to add ten-straight points of their own to regain the lead by three. The two squads began trading points and for the remainder of the game, the scores remained within 5 points of each other. To conclude regulation, the Green and Gold tied it up on a Taylor three and a Faison free throw. The scoreboard read 62-62.
Â
A Warrior three opened up the overtime period and remained the only score through nearly three full minutes of play. Overtime saw the home team outscore the Broncos 18-6 to secure the contest's final score of 80-68.Â
