POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team will return to Kellogg Arena to host the final regular season game of the 2015-16 campaign Saturday. The contest, set for 5:30 p.m., will feature the Broncos and, in the two squads' first-ever meeting, the Cal State San Marcos Cougars.
Saturday's contest, in addition to being the annual Homecoming Game for CPP Athletics, will also be senior night. The Green and Gold have just one senior on squad this year in
Mary Williams. A native of Rialto, Williams leads the team with 11.4 points per game and is second on squad with 163 rebounds for an average of 6.5 a game.
Williams was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week for her performance in the week of Dec. 7-13. Her scoring average lands her at No. 19 on the conference leaderboard, while her rebounds earn her the No. 9 spot.
Thus far this season, the Broncos have amassed a 10-16 overall record complete with an 8-11 mark in CCAA play. The squad currently sits at seventh in the conference standings and is vying for a spot in the conference tournament to be held the first week of March.
As they head to Kellogg Arena, the Cougars hold a conference record of 4-14 en route to their season tally of 6-17. They will be looking to halt their current two-game skid as they fell at home to both the UC San Diego Tritons and the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes.
Vying for the playoff spot, CPP will look to all of its leaders against the Cougars. With Williams leading the squad offensively, just behind her in the point tally with an average of 10.5 of her own is
Jordyn Shane. After Shane is
Priscilla Brooks and
Marshanique Hall with 9.1 and 8.2 ppg, respectively.
Brooks is the team leader in the rebounds category as she has pulled down 237 thus far in her opening season as a Bronco. Her total and 9.5 average both earn her the No. 2 spot on the conference leaderboards in the respective category.
The matchup against the Cougars and homecoming game will feature a giveaway of foam fingers to the first 1,000 fans to Kellogg Arena on the day of competition, a chance to win VIP parking in a halftime shooting contest, and a raffle to win a grill. CPP will be hosting festivities throughout the day including a 4:00 pm concert featuring The Drums. Register for homecoming by clicking the following link.
