Second Game of Series Postposed to Sunday

SAN FRANCISCO – The #25 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos and San Francisco State Gators got just one compete game in at the Gators' home at Maloney Field. The first game saw the home team win with a 10th inning walkoff. 

Game two went more the Broncos' way, but ended up getting postponed after a lack of light suspended play. The contest is set to resume at 11 am Sunday before playing the series-finale. 

Game One: Gators 5 – Broncos 4 (10 Innings)

In the first contest of the doubleheader, the Broncos fell after a walkoff hit in the bottom half of the 10th inning. Starting off on the mound for the Broncos was Ryan Olson, however the loss in the contest came to Max Bethell after the unfortunate single in the 10th. 

Olson pitched for a total of six innings in the contest and allowed five hits with three runs, just two of them earned. He threw a total of 100 pitches and faced 26 batters. Of those 26 he racked up five strikeouts and one walk. 

In the contest, the CPP offense racked up nine hits. Chris Stratton led off for the Green and Gold and tallied two hits with two runs scored. Jared James extended his hit streak to ten with three hits in five at bats. He recorded a pair of Runs Batted In and one run scored himself. Michael Zidek also added a pair of hits to the game. 

In the fourth inning, the scoring started off in San Francisco. James doubled to right center to score Stratton. After James' score, Nic Hernandez reached on a fielding error by the left fielder that enabled James to score. The final run for CPP in that inning came on a wild pitch as Hernandez scored and Zidek moved to third. 

In the fifth inning, the home team answered back as a balk by Olson enabled their runner at third to come home. They would score again in the seventh with a double down the left field line and a fielding error by the second baseman. The score stood at 3-3 and forced extra innings. 

In inning 10, the Broncos pulled ahead as James came in clutch with a double down the left field line that scored Stratton once again. In the bottom half of the same inning, the home team would secure the victory with a single through the left side that allowed a pair of runs to score and the final score to come up as 5-4. 

Game Two: Broncos 6 – Gators 3 (Postponed at the Top of Nine)

The second game will be completed on Sunday morning at 11 am and will pick off at the top of the ninth inning as the Broncos lead the Gators 6-3. 

Dealing for the Broncos on the mound first was Michael Koval, The junior pitched for three innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs to score. He struck out four of the 17 batters faced and allowed just a single walk. 

Coming in for relief after Koval was Tyler Rowe, the newcomer to CPP pitched for 4.1 innings, allowing zero hits. He did walk six though and strike out two of the 18 batters faced. Closing out the eighth for the Broncos was Peter Beattie, he faced just two batters and recorded both outs. 

Socring first was the Gators as a ground out to second base enabled a runner to advance and another to score. 

The Broncos answered in the top of the third as James posted another RBI with a single to right. Scoring was Stratton, and the hit extended James' consecutive-game hit streak to 11. The bottom half of the same inning added a couple more runs for the SFSU squad as a single to center score two. 

In the top of the fifth, the Broncos evened it up with a Caleb Romo sac fly to right that scored Stratton from third. The next at bat saw Hernandez nab another RBI as a single up the middle resulted in Bruno scoring. 

In the top of the seventh, CPP took the lead as Bruno singled to right to bring home Stratton. The score stood at 4-3. Later in the same half inning, two more runs would score as Michael Zidek punched a sacrifice fly to right that scored Bruno. Next up, Hernandez advanced to third and Romo scored to bring the game to its postponed score of 6-3.
